00Before you start
You'll need:
- A Shopify store with at least one active location (Settings → Locations).
- A theme that supports app blocks on the product page. Most current themes (Online Store 2.0) do, including Shopify's free themes such as Dawn.
- Products with inventory tracking turned on (“Track quantity” on the product or variant).
Availability: StockByLocation isn't listed on the Shopify App Store yet. If you'd like to use it, email info@teskesoftware.com and we'll let you know when it's available to install.
01Install the app
- Open the StockByLocation installation page (the App Store listing, once published) and choose Install.
- Review the permissions and approve them. StockByLocation asks to:
- View products: to know which variant a shopper is looking at;
- View inventory: to read quantities per location;
- View locations: to list your locations and their names and addresses;
- Manage the app proxy: so the storefront block can request availability through your store's own domain.
- The app opens inside your Shopify admin under Apps → StockByLocation.
StockByLocation only reads data. It can't change your products, prices or inventory.
02Start your plan
When you first open the app without an active plan, Shopify shows its plan-selection page. Choose Starter ($3.99 per month) to start the 14-day free trial. Billing is handled by Shopify and appears on your Shopify invoice.
If a plan isn't active (for example, after cancelling), the app returns you to the plan page, and the storefront block won't show availability.
03Select locations
The app's home page walks you through three steps: Select locations, Customize display and Add StockByLocation to the theme.
- Under Locations, tick each location you want shoppers to see. Each is listed with its Shopify name and, where available, its city.
- Optionally fill in Display as to show a different name to shoppers, for example “Amsterdam Centrum” instead of “AMS-01 Warehouse”.
- Save. At least one location must be selected.
Only active Shopify locations appear in the list. If a location is missing, check that it's active under Settings → Locations in your Shopify admin.
04Display & messages
Display mode
- Status: shows a message such as “In stock”.
- Exact quantity: shows the number, such as “8 in stock”.
Behaviour
- Low stock threshold (default
3): a quantity above zero and at or below this number counts as low stock. Zero or less counts as out of stock. - Hide out-of-stock locations (off by default): leaves locations without stock out of the list.
- Show location address (off by default): adds the street address and city under each location.
Text
| Field | Default |
|---|---|
| In-stock text | In stock |
| Low-stock text | Only {{quantity}} left |
| Out-of-stock text | Out of stock |
| Quantity text | {{quantity}} in stock |
Use {{quantity}} anywhere in a message to insert the live number. Messages are plain text: HTML is removed, and each field can hold up to 200 characters. Write them in your store's language. They're shown exactly as you enter them.
05Add the block to your product template
- In the app, click Add to theme. This opens the theme editor for your current theme on the product template.
- In the product information section, choose Add block, open the Apps tab and select Stock by location.
- Drag the block to where you want it. Directly below the variant picker or the buy buttons usually works well.
- Optionally adjust the block settings:
- Heading: default “Store availability”;
- Style: Minimal or Boxed.
- Click Save in the theme editor.
Prefer to do it manually? Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, switch the page selector at the top to Products → Default product, and follow steps 2–5. If your store uses more than one product template, add the block to each template you use.
06What shoppers see
- While loading, the block briefly shows “Checking availability…”.
- It then lists your selected locations with their status or quantity, using your texts.
- When a shopper picks a different variant, such as another size or colour, the block refreshes for that variant.
- Availability is read live from Shopify on every request, so it reflects your current inventory.
07Troubleshooting
The block says “Select locations in the StockByLocation app to display inventory.”
No locations have been saved yet. Open the app, tick at least one location under Locations and click Save. Then reload the product page.
The block says “Inventory isn't tracked for this variant.”
Shopify isn't tracking stock for that variant, so there's nothing to show. In your Shopify admin, open the product, select the variant, and turn on Track quantity.
I don't see the block on my product page at all.
Check these in order:
- The block was added and saved in the theme editor, on the template that this product actually uses, in the theme that's currently published.
- Your theme supports app blocks in the product section (Online Store 2.0 themes do).
- The product is Active (or Unlisted) and published to the Online Store sales channel. Draft, archived and unpublished products don't get availability data.
- Your StockByLocation plan is active.
A location doesn't appear in the app.
Only active Shopify locations are listed. Check Settings → Locations in your Shopify admin and make sure the location is active.
A location doesn't appear on the storefront.
Make sure the location is ticked and saved in the app. If Hide out-of-stock locations is on, locations without stock for the selected variant are intentionally left out.
The quantity shown differs from what I expected.
StockByLocation shows the available quantity Shopify reports for each location: stock that isn't already committed to orders. Compare it with the “Available” column for that location in Shopify's inventory view. Also check your Low stock threshold: it decides when the low-stock text is used.
My formatting or links don't show in the messages.
Messages are plain text for safety: HTML tags are removed and each message is limited to 200 characters. Use {{quantity}} for the number.
I changed a setting but the storefront looks the same.
Make sure you clicked Save in the app, then reload the product page. Block settings (heading and style) are saved separately in the theme editor.
The app keeps sending me to a plan page.
The app needs an active plan. Choose Starter on Shopify's plan page. New installs get a 14-day free trial. If you believe your plan is active and this still happens, email us with your store address.
08Uninstalling
Remove StockByLocation from Settings → Apps and sales channels in your Shopify admin. Shopify stops showing the app's block on your storefront, and the app ends its access to your store. Your StockByLocation settings and stored sessions are deleted from the app database when Shopify tells us the app was uninstalled. See the app privacy policy for details.
